Allergy Testing

What are allergies?

Allergies are an immune system response to a substance such as pollen or pet dander. Although allergens aren’t typically harmful for your body, your immune system can have a hypersensitive response to the allergen, identifying it as a serious threat.

Then, your immune system releases histamine, a natural chemical that fights the allergen. The histamine launches the symptoms such as sneezing and watery eyes.

What are the most common allergens?

There are hundreds of different allergens, but some of the most common include:

Airborne allergens

Some of the most common airborne allergens can include mold, pollen, pet dander, and dust mites.

Food allergens

Food allergens often affect children, but they can happen at any age. Some common food allergens include milk, peanuts, corn, wheat, and soy.

Skin allergens

Skin allergens cause skin symptoms like puffy, blistering, and itchy skin but they usually don’t cause nasal symptoms. Common skin allergens include latex, nickel, and a huge range of different chemicals in lotions, detergents, and other household products.

There are many other allergies, for example insect sting allergies as well. No matter what sort of allergies you’re facing, Stone Oak Urgent Care & Family Practice wants to help.

How does the allergy testing process work?

Stone Oak Urgent Care & Family Practice uses three types of allergy tests, including:

Skin test

In a skin test, your Stone Oak Urgent Care & Family Practice provider makes very small skin punctures and then applies microscopic amounts of possible allergens. After a short wait, the punctures that grow red or develop small welts indicate which substances you’re allergic to.

Blood test

In a blood test, your Stone Oak Urgent Care & Family Practice provider simply takes some blood from your arm for laboratory analysis. This test checks the level of immunoglobulin E antibodies, the antibodies that trigger allergies, in your blood.

Elimination diet

In an elimination diet, which is typically used for food allergies, you make dietary changes to isolate the cause of your allergies.

Stone Oak Urgent Care & Family Practice offers on-site allergy testing of all types for your convenience.

What happens after allergy testing?

After determining your specific allergies, Dr. Gogu personalizes your treatment. Depending on the allergy, you may need allergy shots, dietary changes, lifestyle changes, or oral medication.
